Drama is among the five subjects that form part of The Arts, a learning area recognised as a fundamental component of the Australian Curriculum. Although drama is linked to performance, it is not a subject only for students interested in acting. Drama is relevant to all students as it develops transferable skills that can be utilised anywhere.
Through a wide range of experiences and activities in drama classes, such as dramatic warm-up exercises and game play, improvisation performances, character creation and role-play, our goal for Treendale Primary students is to:
1. Improve confidence to try new things and resilience to embrace making mistakes as part of the learning process.
2. Learn improvisation skills and enhance initiative, so the two can be used in conjunction as a means of navigating future challenges.
3. Creatively and safely explore issues and themes that may connect to students’ own immediate lives, affect the wider community, or have impact on a global scale, in a supportive space.
4. Enhance communication by engaging in a diverse range of speaking and listening activities.
5. Gain new perspectives, challenge perceptions, and develop empathy through collaborative and inclusive practices.
6. Boost creativity and imagination, while simultaneously boosting students’ love of being creative and imaginative.
